Coincidences abound. I mean, really. Harry flies to Hong Kong to find and release his daughter, whom, he assumes, has been kidnapped by the Triad because of his personal actions in the LA investigation.

Is there anyone who actually believes this might ever be possible? Connelly is a competent writer and a good story-teller.

But this one just had me shaking my head in wonder. Mar 26, Fred rated it it was amazing Shelves: html-img , mystery , html-href. Lately, Eleanor tells him Maddie wants to live in L.

An unbelievable shocking end you will not see coming, with another death in the story, as Maddie now lives with Bosch in LA!!

Bosch is called out to a murder and finds clues that lead to a Chinese Triad crime gang member who was shaking the victim down for protection money.

This part of the book is good—the investigation, with Bosch dealing with a partner who is too scared to be on the street, a detective from another division who is so enthusiastic he's coming close to blowing the case 9 Dragons is an incredibly suspenseful book!

This part of the book is good—the investigation, with Bosch dealing with a partner who is too scared to be on the street, a detective from another division who is so enthusiastic he's coming close to blowing the case, and the red tape from his supervisors who can't authorize overtime or wiretaps.

Then, from Hong Kong, where his daughter lives with her mother, a video is sent to Bosch of his daughter tied up and gagged. His ex-wife teams him up with the man she's seeing—a Chinese man who is her bodyguard and security at the casino in which she works.

There are some BIG twists in the plot that were completely out of the blue, and the book was so good that I felt myself reading faster and faster to find out what was going to happen.

I could not put it down. I love all of Michael Connelly's books but this one really stood out not sure how I missed this one when it first came out?

Just a great, great read. This didn't blow a lot of wind up my skirt most of the time. Oh, I never got bored or disliked it, but I'm not fond of Len Cariou's narration as compared to the earlier guy Dick Hill?

His weighty words make a police procedural read like a police report. The story was typical Connelly, though. Other characters in the series take part, so it's important This didn't blow a lot of wind up my skirt most of the time.

Other characters in the series take part, so it's important to read this in order, as usual. Mickey Haller had a small, but excellent role to play.

Once again I finish a Michael Connelly novel in complete awe at the story that he has written. Nine Dragons might be one of the best Bosch novels so far, however as always I am reluctant to say that while still on a high from finishing the story.

All I do know is that not many authors can sustain this quality in their crime series after so many books. Nine Dragons sees Bosch investigating a shooting at a neighbourhood off-license.

When connections to the Triad appear, Bosch soon finds himself being threatened. When he receives a video of his daughter bound up across the world in Hong Kong, he immediately jumps on the next plane and is re-united with his ex-wife Eleanor Wish as they hunt down those responsible for taking his daughter.

A third of the book is set in Hong Kong and it was captured brilliantly. A really vivid portrayal, taking place across the course of just one day made this an exhilarating and atmospheric part of the story.

Basically what all that means is that this story is amazing. Bosch has always been a fascinating character. I was also thrilled to see the return of another of his family members.

I just love this series and my reading enjoyment since quitting the blog only keeps going up now that I am reading the books I want to read and the series I want to read, when I want to read them.

So many people become bogged down by review books that seeing their stress on Twitter only makes me value my reading time even more. Long may this series continue and bring on the next one.

It seems like a robbery gone wrong, but Harry's investigation points to a Chinese triad gang connection.

When Harry and Detective Chu make an arrest in the case, Harry receives a video of his daughter, Maddie, who has been kidnapped in Hong Kong.

Harry drops everything to go to Hong Kong and rescue his daughter from the hands of the triad. Another entertaining Harry Bosch mystery from Michael A new homicide case has Harry Bosch investigating the death of a Chinese man who owned a liquor store.

Another entertaining Harry Bosch mystery from Michael Connelly. I liked the whole triad angle of this story. Harry working with his ex-wife and her friend, Sun Yee, while looking for Maddie was interesting.

The whole story was pretty good, but I was disappointed by how the end was written and how we were told about exactly what happened.

That didn't work for me since I'd rather be "shown" instead of "told". My rating: 4 Stars. Shelves: detective-mystery , audiobooks , action-adventure-thriller , michael-connelly.

Positives: - A cool cameo by sleazy defense attorney Mickey Haller. Positive or negative, depending on your perspective: - The middle third of the book was basically a retelling of the Liam Neeson movie Taken.

Negatives: - Not much character development in this book. It's a dark, twisted story that takes place over a very short period of time.

It is a story of good intentions going very wrong. It's a strong entry in the series, but not my most favorite. There seemed to be no uniformity of walking to your right.

People moved every which way and Bosch had to pay attention to avoid collisions. At one point the people moving in front of him suddenly stepped left and right and Bosch almost stumbled over an old woman… Harry Bosch is called to the murder of the elderly Chinese owner of a liquor store in downtown LA, teamed with detective David Chu of the Asian Gang Unit.

The store owner has a gun he was unable to draw and in his dying moments he hides There seemed to be no uniformity of walking to your right.

The store owner has a gun he was unable to draw and in his dying moments he hides the casing from one of the bullets that kills him.

The surveillance camera tape is missing, but two earlier discs show a black would-be shoplifter threatening him, and an earlier transaction where the owner hands money to a man of Oriental appearance.

Chu, born and raised in LA is unable to translate and Bosch sends the image to his year old daughter, living with her mother in Hong Kong, unwittingly setting in train a series of events.

A suspect on the tape is identified and brought in as he tries to flee the country but evidence is flimsy, their only hope advanced technology to bring up prints on the bullet casing.

Connelly produces another tight thriller, the action laced with tensions between detectives of different law enforcement agencies, between a mother and teenage daughter, a man and his former wife and her new partner, of a clash of cultures.

Bosch hands an impoverished elderly woman money for information and is astounded to see her set alight a one hundred dollar note as an offering to "the hungry ghosts".

I enjoyed the twists and turns and usually great knowledge that Connelly adds to the novels. So let me say this. Maybe that makes me mean-hearted, but I NEVER liked her character, how she broke the law, then has a kid and doesn't tell Harry about it, takes their daughter and moves away.

That's some B. So when she dies, I wasn't sad. In fact, I like the twist that now Bosch is going to have to raise a teenage daughter. THAT is going to be interesting.

Oct 14, Amy rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorite-books , reads. I read this book in about 4 hours today which is a lot faster than I usually read Connelly books.

Usually I like to savor them slowly, analyze all of Bosch's moves, and then realize I love his character SO much that I want him to come to my house so I can cook him dinner and cookies and talk to him all night.

I come to this same conclusion after reading each Bosch book, and I really think he is one of the most complex, most interesting, and most heartbreaking characters in fiction.

However, I really got into this book, had a lot of time at the airport, and was desperate for a 5 star book that it didn't last nearly long enough and I read through it very quickly.

The premise of the book is different from most of Bosch's other stories - before this he is a man who truly "finds refuge in himself", but when his daughter is kidnapped, his world seems to crumble and he can't find happiness in himself.

I'm generally not a big fan of using the child getting kidnapped plotline, but I really enjoyed this story.

I felt as though he wasn't searching for his daughter, but himself instead. There were a few plot twists I didn't expect, and since I had figured out the last Connelly books, I enjoyed being fooled at the end.

There is a great "cameo" appearance by another Connelly-verse character, and I hope he continues that storyline in later books.

I also loved how the winner of Connelly's Nine Dragons contest got her name in the book as a minor character - I was definitely a little jealous when her name kept popping up!

This book had a lot going on - more than usual, I think, and probably a lot more than Harry would have preferred. It's a must-read for any Bosch fans.

He seemed to make a lot of mistakes in this case, although I can't really say anyone else would have done better. Still, this one was a life-changer for him and his daughter, and especially his ex-wife.

It would be hard for anyone to recover from these events. We get a little visit from his half-brother, Micky Haller The Lincoln Lawyer who shows This book had a lot going on - more than usual, I think, and probably a lot more than Harry would have preferred.

We get a little visit from his half-brother, Micky Haller The Lincoln Lawyer who shows off why he's so disliked by most of the police and prosecutors.

Of course, since he's a defence lawyer, that's to be expected; but he's especially good at it. Aug 27, MaryG2E rated it liked it Shelves: zwanted-to-read , books-re-read , zalphabetical.

The story opens with Detectives Bosch and Ferras called to a liquor store killing in a poor part of town. The victim is ethnic Chinese, John Li, and the detectives quickly work out that he was paying protection money to a Chinese triad.

Harry sends some of the images from his cell phone to his daughter Maddie, who lives in Hong Kong with her mother, Eleanor Wish.

Shortly afterwards, Maddie disappears, and Harry suspects the triad is responsible, applying pressure on him to abandon the case of Mr The story opens with Detectives Bosch and Ferras called to a liquor store killing in a poor part of town.

Eventually he catches a flight to HK, to investigate the case personally. I found this book a little uneven. There are some excellent passages, particularly in the earlier sections, but there are also some clunky parts.

The solving of the crime, including the procedural details, have been subsumed by the almost hysterical behaviour of Harry on the warpath in LA and Hong Kong.

Until recently Harry Bosch has been one of my favourite fictional characters. I've loved his free-spirited ways, his amazing house, his passion for jazz music, his intensity and dedication.

He has an independent turn of mind, and an amazing capacity for hard work. He does not suffer fools gladly. He is also stubborn and can be spectacularly insensitive to others at times.

More and more, Bosch flouts standard procedure and abuses the trust vested in him by the law, the command structure and his colleagues.

He is increasingly maverick, while still keeping his compassion for victims and their families intact. However, in Nine Dragons he has gone too far for this reader.

Bosch raised his left fist and struck the man viciously in the ribs. In fact, I am appalled by it. Harry is called to the scene of a murder in a convenience store where the elderly Chinese owner has been gunned down.

Video surveillance leads him to a suspect from the local Triad, who he promptly arrests, but then he receives a chilling video of his 13 year old daughter in Hong Kong, and knows he will do whatever it takes to get her back.

Having Harry investigating off the books in the alien environment of Hong Kong made for an interesting change - he is forced to work with an unexpected ally and cope with a devastating loss to get the job done.

The intuitive leaps as he follows clues around the city seemed rather far-fetched, and the way he gets away with leaving such a large trail of bodies equally implausible, but I enjoyed the Haller cameo.

Mar 31, Scott rated it it was amazing Shelves: mystery. Investigating the murder of the Chinese American becomes a life-changing event for Harry, when the clues lead him to believing that this was not an ordinary robbery.

Rather, the evidence supports that it was a possible execution by a hitman, representing the Triad, a deadly Chinese organized crime syndicate that follows many immigrants and their new American lives.

Those reaches become very personal for Harry. When Harry hunts down the Triad killer and arrests him before he can escape back to Hong Kong, the Triad is also ready two steps ahead of Bosch.

They want him to back off and warn him of the consequences of his actions. But that is not enough. The Triad has found what is most dear to Harry and his world is instantly shattered when he receives an unbelievable video from his daughter on his cellphone.

Thirteen-year-old Maddie, the one person that Harry loves and holds dearest in his life, has been kidnapped by Triad members in Hong Kong, where she has been living with her mother and ex-wife of Harry, Eleanor Wish.

Harry feels like he has no choice but to act fast before the Triad killer gets released from jail.

He is in a deadly race - 48 to travel to Hong Kong and back, including only 24 hours in Hong Kong to find Maddie. As with many Bosch novels, the key moments take place over a period of a week or so, moving from L.

The two have been mostly offscreen the past several books, living in Hong Kong while Eleanor works as a professional gambler for a prestigious casino.

And bring them back Connelly does, in a big, and extremely personal way. The second half of the book, Harry is crazed and pushed to his limits as he fights to protect and save his only two living family members.

Eleanor and Maddie are the only two people Bosch has not completely pushed out of his life and now they need his selfish and cavalier behavior more than ever.

Connelly has never created more personal drama and tension for Harry than in this particular story.

He makes it so easy to just soak in the words effortlessly and get lost in the story as if you were right there next to Harry and Eleanor racing to find Maddie.

Because of the involvement of family, this one is even more personal to Harry, and therefore personal to the reader. It seems that harry is at his best when he crosses the line in his behaviors and actions.

His own dark side and prideful drive blind and alienate him from not only the police structure that he needs to politically operate within to successfully perform his work, but also drives away any relationships and friendships that he may have.

Overall, this outing is a game-changer for Harry Bosch and will impact future books in the series. It also sets-up Harry for personal challenges and growth.

I also find myself continually impressed with the strong quality that Connelly applies to each one of his books. Connelly is a master narrator, never telling the same story twice, and constantly treating his readers with tight plotting, well-developed characters, and surprising twists that increase the tension and outcomes.

I keep making the same statement after finishing each of his novels, and I am making it again - Bosch just gets better and better. This time especially, Connelly forces Bosch to deal with what matters most to him in his life, and face the risk of losing her.

By the end of the book, he is changed in unexpected ways that will have an indelible impact on him moving forward. A bit slow to start with but got really exciting with all sorts of unexpected events and finished with some amazing twists.

It has got really interesting now that Bosch has the vulnerability of a daughter to look after. This series just keeps getting better and better.

Oct 19, Lisa rated it it was ok. You've seen the movie "Taken"? That's this plotline, and it's as over-the-top and pointless here as it was in that movie.

When we finally get back to L. I usually like Connelly — his writing style is perfect for his books, straightforward and unadorned, propelling the story rather than distracting from it.

Dec 18, kartik narayanan rated it really liked it. Nine Dragons is like 3 different stories rolled into one book but is ultimately still fun to read.

So the first half of the book deals with your standard homicide. That portion is fine. Typical Bosch. Then we find that the book has 'Taken' a strange turn.

Yes, Bosch goes full Liam Neeson in search of his kidnapped daughter. The last few chapters of the book focus on the relationship between Bosch and Madeline.

The transitions are a bit abrupt and in my opinion, the TV series has done a better job Nine Dragons is like 3 different stories rolled into one book but is ultimately still fun to read.

The transitions are a bit abrupt and in my opinion, the TV series has done a better job of mixing disparate elements like the above, than Nine Dragons does.

I am a bit disappointed that the last couple of books have seen Bosch become more of an action star than a homicide detective.

I mean the action is not bad but I read Bosch for the whodunnits and the atmosphere. In any case, Nine Dragons was still fun to read.
